Arenal Lake
Is one of the top three places of the world
for practicing Wind Surf, also are Lago Garda in Italy and Río Gorge in Columbia,
United States. That is Arenal Lake, an ideal place for the lovers of this sport,
where wind’s speed of the western part can exceed the 40 Kms. /h (24 miles/hour),
in summer time, from November to April. In the rest of the year, the wind runs slower.
These months are better for those who want to learn how to make windsurf.
This lake, is near the volcano with the same name; in fact there are places from where one can see it,
if the sky is clear. Near the west side, the Cerro Montecristo is located, where is the project of eolic
generation, Tejona; that takes advantage of the strong winds of the area.
Most Located in canton Tilarán, Guanacaste (a small portion of the oriental sector of the lake, is in
Alajuela province), Arenal Lake, besides of being the biggest in the country, has another particular
characteristic... it is of artificial origin.
This lake was created in 1973, to develop the biggest electric generation project in Costa Rica. Under
the lake’s surface, there are two towns (Arenal and Tronadora) whose inhabitants had to be transferred
to new towns.
Arenal Lake is also a good place for sport fishing, where Tilapias and Guapotes can be found. It is also
possible to take a boat trip through the lake and to enjoy the landscape. Although it is necessary to
have caution with streams near the water’s tube, in the dams’s opposite end, for that is better to ask
in which areas one has to be careful when going into in the lake.
In short, this lake offers a variety of options, so that the tourist highly enjoys his visit.
